The “Drowning” denominator, the “X” numerator, and the innovative findings
Unlike other fields of scientific interest, research on drowning is relatively new and therefore we know much less than what we have discovered. Indeed, the fields of medicine, history, philosophy, pedagogy and psychology are much older and as such, a body of knowledge has emerged for centuries. In water safety most research is focusing on prevention, rescue and treatment from the field of injury epidemiology, medicine and sport biomechanics. An expansion of our research questions, would lead us to profound worlds of knowledge and understanding.
This is what I do the last years and has resulted in some interesting discoveries. I set “unusual” research questions. I keep as denominator the term “drowning” and change each time the numerator to anything. I have travelled to unexplored areas and the findings are profound. Precisely, there are dozens religious references that involved miraculous non-fatal and martyrdom fatal drownings. Over 700 Hollywood films contain drowning episodes and rescue scenes. More than 2000 song lyrics talk about lifeguarding, swimming, the “kiss of life”, and drowning. Over 2000 paintings depict fictional or historical drowning episodes.
We live “submerged” in a world full of neglected data on drowning. By making unusual research questions (i.e. behave like archeologists that dig in underground caves), we may end up to profound discoveries in relation to drowning, lifesaving.
El denominador «Ahogamiento», el numerador «X» y hallazgos innovadores.
A diferencia de otros campos de interés científico, la investigación sobre el ahogamiento es relativamente nueva, por lo que sabemos mucho menos de lo que hemos descubierto. De hecho, los campos de la medicina, la historia, la filosofía, la pedagogía y la psicología son mucho más antiguos y, como tales, llevamos siglos generando un cuerpo de conocimientos. En la seguridad acuática, la mayor parte de la investigación se centra en la prevención, rescate y tratamiento desde la óptica de la epidemiología de las lesiones, la medicina y la biomecánica del deporte. Expandir nuestras áreas de investigación y preguntas, nos llevaría a profundizar en el conocimiento y la comprensión de este mundo.
Esto es lo que vengo haciendo en los últimos años y que me ha dado lugar a algunos descubrimientos interesantes utilizando «inusuales» preguntas en mi investigación. Conservando como denominador el término «ahogamiento», cambio cada vez el numerador a cualquier otra cosa.
He viajado a zonas inexploradas y los resultados son profundos. Precisamente, hay decenas de referencias religiosas que refieren milagrosas escenas de ahogamientos no fatales o de ahogamientos fatales de mártires. Más de 700 películas de Hollywood tienen episodios de ahogamiento o escenas de rescate. Más de 2000 letras de las canciones hablan de socorristas, nadar, el «beso de la vida», o ahogarse. Más de 2000 pinturas representan episodios de ahogamiento históricos o ficticios.
Vivimos «sumergidos» en un mundo lleno de datos erróneos relacionados con el ahogamiento. Al hacer preguntas inusuales de investigación (es decir, comportándonos como los arqueólogos que excavan en enterramientos subterráneas), espero que podamos acabar haciendo descubrimientos en relación al ahogamiento y salvar vidas.
